Life is good here in Portland. It’s a combination of small town and big city, with lots of the amenities from both.
Our unusually cool spring is almost over, and it won’t be long before summer arrives in Portland. It’s still rather cool, even for this time of year, but those warmer days are right around the corner. This city has great activities to offer all summer long.
Activity Around Portland
Whether you’re in Deering, Great Diamond Island, Munjoy Hill, or anywhere in between, or have plans to visit The Arts District, the weather is warming up for a fun summer. You might be headed out to spend some time at the Riverside Golf Course, or taking a drive up I-302 to head to Vermont for a visit. Or maybe you’re one of the many urban farmers in our area that’s planting, gardening and looking forward to a good harvest this year.
If you prefer to shop at a farmer’s market instead of growing your own, you’re in luck. The Portland area is home to a number of farmer’s markets throughout the area. Spring and summer produce is becoming available for your summer festivities.
Prefer the beach? Portland is within driving distance to eight beach areas, as well as the waterfront off Casco Bay, where you can visit lighthouses and see lobster boats bringing in the catches.
Nature fans have a myriad of state parks, campgrounds, working farms and botanical gardens available for day trips. Like to watch birds or other wildlife? The Maine Wildlife Park in Gray has nature trails, picnic grounds, and over 30 species of native wildlife. You’ll have the opportunity to see anything from a moose, bears or deer to turtles, bald eagles, and owls. Lynx, bobcats, and cougars are also out prowling.
For the festival fans, summer fairs like Schoonfest “Tall Ships,” Westbrook Together Days and the Portland Wine Week are in June, with more festivals in July, August, and September. Feast on Maine-centric foods with locally grown blueberries and Maine-harvested lobsters while you listen to live music and find more interesting things to explore.
If the summer is just too hot for you, The Portland Ice William B. Troubh Ice Arena is available for skating year-round. Don’t ice skate yet? They offer skating lessons as well as skate sharpening services, and the fees are reasonable.
